String Orchestra - Intermediate - Digital Download Composed by trad. Arranged by Keith Terrett. 20th Century, European, Patriotic. Score, Set of Parts. 10 pages. Published by Music for all Occasions
Londonderry Air arranged for String Orchestra.<br> <br> A big band version of the song is used as the theme for The Danny Thomas Show (a.k.a. Make Room For Daddy).<br> <br> "Danny Boy" was used to represent Northern Ireland at the start of the London 2012 Olympics opening ceremony, sung by a choir of children on the Giants Causeway.<br> <br> On November 25, 2014, the Vancouver Canucks used the song in honor of the recently deceased Pat Quinn, who played and worked in many executive capacities for the team.<br> <br> There are various theories as to the true meaning of "Danny Boy". Some listeners have interpreted the song to be a message from a parent to a son going off to war or leaving as part of the Irish diaspora.<br> <br> The 1918 version of the sheet music included alternative lyrics ("Eily Dear"), with the instructions that "when sung by a man, the words in italic should be used; the song then becomes "Eily Dear", so that "Danny Boy" is only to be sung by a lady". In spite of this, it is unclear whether this was Weatherlys intent.<br> <br> Why the name Londonderry Air? Londonderry and Derry refer to the same place, a city in the north of Ireland, and also to the surrounding county. Supposedly the city of Derry was founded by St. Colmcille, although archaeological evidence shows that people were living there thousands of years earlier. There is an excellent museum in the city, which is worth a visit if you want to find out more. The name of the city was actually "Doire", corrupted to "Derry" by people who cant pronounce Irish. It thought to derive from an Irish root meaning "oak tree".<br> <br> Moving quickly along in history, about a millenium later the government of England was having a difficult time colonizing Ireland because of the fierce and warlike clans living there, especially in the north of the country, Ulster. The monarchs of England, almost all of whom were notorious cheapskates, were continually looking about for ingenious ways to conquer places without actually having to put up the money themselves, or run the risk of unpopularity if they lost. In the case of Ireland, some of these schemes of the "Brish gummit" (as it is termed nowadays in Ulster) are still producing unfortunate long-term consequences.<br> <br> In 1608, King James I gave the city of Derry to the City of London corporation. I guess the deal could be summed up by saying that if the City of London could figure out a way to chase all the inhabitants out of Derry, they would be allowed to keep the loot, minus a percentage for the King of course. If they lost, well too bad. In celebration of this historic agreement, the name of Derry was officially changed to Londonderry. (For further information, check out the Northern Ireland Tourist Boards History of Derry.)<br> <br> The linguistic outcome of all this today is that, if you think that King Jamess deal with the City of London was a good idea, you call both the city and county "Londonderry". If you do, you are probably a supporter of the Unionist movement that seeks to keep Ulster a part of the United Kingdom. If you think it was a bad idea, you call both "Derry", and you are probably a supporter of the Irish Nationalist cause. Or you might just be someone who thinks its confusing for kings to be going around changing the names of places all the time for no good reason.<br> <br> You can find plenty of discussion about the political side of the question elsewhere, but here lets look at the musical side. We have an air, collected in county Derry/Londonderry, and it doesnt have a title. What do we call it?<br> <br> If you were a proper Victorian, theres no way you were going to call it the Londonderry Air, much less the Derry Air, because of the improper sentiments that these titles might suggest. My parents tell me that in their youth in Australia, it was usually called the Air from County Derry. (This would, I suppose, support Winston Churchills theory that Australia was inhabited by "convicts and Irishmen".)<br> <br> My mother also sends the following information, referring to an arrangement of the tune by the Australian composer Percy Grainger:<br> <br> Just another note about Danny Boy, that I grew up in Australia believing to be the Air from County Derry. We were looking through some LPs last night (back to vinyl yet!) and found a Mercury Wing Classical Favorites stereo LP SRW18060, COUNTRY GARDENS and other favorites by Percy Grainger {played by} Eastman-Rochester Pops, Frederick Fennell, conducting. The cover notes included the following: "Irish Tune from County Derry was harmonised in memory of Irish childhood friends in Australia." Considered by many to be Graingers masterpiece of harmonization, the tune was collected many years ago by Miss Jane Ross of New Town, Limavady, Ireland. Grainger has set it for many instrumental combinations. So theres another variant on the name for it. It doesnt say who wrote the notes, but the bits in quotes for each of the works on the record are Graingers original comments.<br> <br> The references to Londonderry Air that Ive seen dont go back any earlier than the late 1930s. For example, the Glenn Miller Orchestra recorded Danny Boy (Londonderry Air) in February 1940. Bing Crosbys version was recorded in July 1941 (reference). (So many different things I could check up on!) Londonderry was an important American naval base during WWII, but the US hadnt come into the war in 1940.<br> <br> Need an anthem fast? They are ALL in my store! All my anthem arrangements are also available for Orchestra, Recorders, Saxophones, Wind, Brass and Flexible band. If you need an anthem urgently for an instrumentation not in my store, let me know via e-mail, and I will arrange it for you FOC if possible! keithterrett@gmail.com<br> <br> Contact Publisher Related Scores

By Various. Arranged by Keith Terrett. Score, Set of Parts. 8 pages. Published by Music for all Occasions
Arranged for Solo Bb Brass & Piano "Garota de Ipanema" ("The Girl from Ipanema") is a Brazilian bossa nova and jazz song. It was a worldwide hit in the mid-1960s and won a Grammy for Record of the Year in 1965. It was written in 1962, with music by Antônio Carlos Jobim and Portuguese lyrics by Vinícius de Moraes. English lyrics were written later by Norman Gimbel.<br> <br> The first commercial recording was in 1962, by Pery Ribeiro. The Stan Getz recording featuring the vocal debut of Astrud Gilberto became an international hit. This version had been shortened from the version on the album Getz/Gilberto (recorded in March 1963, released in March 1964) which had also included the Portuguese lyrics sung by Astrud's then husband João Gilberto. In the US, the single peaked at number five on the Billboard Hot 100, and went to number one for two weeks on the Easy Listening chart. Overseas it peaked at number 29 in the United Kingdom, and charted highly throughout the world.<br> <br> Numerous recordings have been used in films, sometimes as an elevator music cliché. It is believed to be the second most recorded pop song in history, after "Yesterday" by The Beatles. The song was inducted into the Latin Grammy Hall of Fame in 2001. In 2004, it was one of 50 recordings chosen that year by the Library of Congress to be added to the National Recording Registry. In 2009, the song was voted by the Brazilian edition of Rolling Stone as the 27th greatest Brazilian song.<br> <br> Ipanema is a fashionable seaside neighborhood located in the southern region of the city of Rio de Janeiro.<br> <br> <br> Helô Pinheiro, the woman who inspired the song, in 2006.<br> The song was composed for a musical comedy titled Dirigível (Blimp), then a work-in-progress of Vinicius de Moraes. The original title was "Menina que Passa" ("The Girl Who Passes By"); the first verse was different. Jobim composed the melody on his piano in his new house in Rua Barão da Torre, in Ipanema. In turn, Moraes had written the lyrics in Petrópolis, near Rio de Janeiro, as he had done with "Chega de Saudade" ("No More Blues") six years earlier.<br> <br> During a recording session in New York with João Gilberto, Antonio Carlos Jobim and Stan Getz, the idea of cutting an English-language version came up. Norman Gimbel wrote the English lyrics. João's wife, Astrud Gilberto, was the only one of the Brazilians who could speak English well and was chosen to sing. Her voice, without trained singer mannerisms, proved a perfect fit for the song. Ethel Ennis and Nat King Cole have also both recorded the song.<br> <br> The song was inspired by Heloísa Eneida Menezes Paes Pinto (now known as Helô Pinheiro), a seventeen-year-old girl living on Montenegro Street in Ipanema. Daily, she would stroll past the Veloso bar-café, not just to the beach ("each day when she walks to the sea"), but in the everyday course of her life. She would sometimes enter the bar to buy cigarettes for her mother and leave to the sound of wolf-whistles. In the winter of 1962, the composers saw the girl pass by the bar. Since the song became popular, she has become a celebrity.<br> <br> In Revelação: a verdadeira Garôta de Ipanema ("Revealed: The Real Girl from Ipanema") Moraes wrote that she was "the paradigm of the young Carioca: a golden teenage girl, a mixture of flower and mermaid, full of light and grace, the sight of whom is also sad, in that she carries with her, on her route to the sea, the feeling of youth that fades, of the beauty that is not ours aloneit is a gift of life in its beautiful and melancholic constant ebb and flow."<br> <br> Ella Fitzgerald recorded this song on her two-disc set of Brazilian music Ella Abraca Jobim, released on the label [[Pablo today}] in 1981.<br> <br> The legacy of "The Girl from Ipanema" was acknowledged by multiple aspects of the 2016 Summer Olympics and Paralympics held in Rio de Janeiro: the Olympic and Paralympic mascots were respectively named Vinicius and Tom after the song's co-writers by a public vote, while the Olympics' opening ceremony featured a segment themed around the song and the architecture of Oscar Niemeyer. Jobim's grandson Daniel performed the song during the segment, which also featured an appearance by Brazilian supermodel Gisele Bündchen. Spotify reported that the song had been streamed on its service 40,000 times per-day in the days following the ceremony (a 1200% increase), while in the U.S., the song reached #5 on Billboard's World Digital Songs chart the following week.

Tonawandaâs Rhapsody 2018 The Western New York Trombone Concerto was inspired in real life experiences, in the smell, the food, the scenic views, and the great personal relationships of the composer during his first year living in the City of the Good Neighbors (Buffalo, NY). More than have a traditional virtuoso solo music featuring fast and extreme technical phrases, this concerto wants to introduce the trombone as a melodic instrument for those beginner listeners that are discovering the trombone for the first time. The concerto has colorful sticky melodies and exciting rhythmic patterns to produces a great experience to the listener.

Piano Solo - Digital Download SKU: A0.901081 Composed by Paul Copeland. 20th Century,Contemporary. Score. 50 pages. Paul Copeland #5988217. Published by Paul Copeland (A0.901081). Audacious Binary Forms for pianist playing one or two pianos, won Australiaâs most prestigious piano composition competition the Jean Bogan Prize for Piano Composition 2016. The world premiere was performed by Michael Kieran Harvey. He is considered by many as being one of Australiaâs greatest living concert pianists. Michael specializes in performing world premieres of compositions by Australian composers. He is also a prolific composer of avant-garde music. ABSTRACT FROM THE GENERAL DIRECTIONS Audacious Binary Forms for piano is in a fractured binary form. Two types of structures exist; lettered structures, which are experimental structures, and explore the sonorities of the piano, and numbered structures, which are more traditional structures. A structure may be a single page or more than one page. Each page in a structure is to be played sequentially. For example, with structure C, consisting of three pages, C1, C2, C3, each page is played sequentially in numerical order, C1, C2, C3. EXPERIMENTAL STRUCTURESThe structures A, B, C, D, E, F, G, Percussion, CADENZA, and CODA are experimental. TRADITIONAL STRUCTURESThe structures 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6, are traditional. PREPARING THE SCORE FOR PERFORMANCE There are four different options for a performance. MINIMALIST OPTIONThe 13 cards cut from the CUTOUT page are shuffled. Card 4 Rag (1,2) is removed. The 12 cards are placed face down. One card is revealed representing the structure that is to be performed. A member of the audience can be invited to shuffle the cards. STOCHASTIC OPTION An audience member or members can be invited to shuffle all the pages of the score. The resultant random sequence of pages becomes the whole score for the performance. PERFORMERâS OPTIONThe performer prepares the structures according to his musical tastes. All of the experimental structures should be performed. The performer is free to play none, some, or all of the traditional structures. Please note that each structure remains an independent structure and is played sequentially. For example, structure C, consisting of three pages would be played C1, C2, C3 in that order. PERFORMER/COMPOSER OPTIONMonths before the concert the performer can contact me at paulcopeland1@bigpond.com, to discuss the performance, and to work out an ideal performance structure for the work, taking into consideration the venue, expected size of audience, size of auditorium, music program, and if two pianos will be available. IMPORTANT INFORMATION REGARDING SHEET MUSIC SIZE Please note that the score should be printed on separate pages (the notated pages), not back to back. Ideally the score should be printed on A3 pages in colour. However the score can still be printed in grayscale. The sheet music file is approximately 15Mb because the score is in full color. Seen in this way, a concert reflects a value system that pits the individual against the group and poses a struggle of I against you. Surely this vehemence could be explained in a Beethovenian era when the concepts of human rights and individual freedom were fragile ideals. However, it is a different scale of values that my piano concerto tries to reflect: the idea of cooperation, of teamwork and of an orchestra as a living organism whose organs are not superior to one another, more vital than others, but fulfil different functions, qualitatively speaking.Every soloist plays a leading role, but this does not imply either subordination to the rest or denigration or subjugation of the rest. The fact that the soloist is sometimes in the foreground does not imply a victory over the others. The very concept of victory is meaningless here.At times, the soloist will fulfil a leadership role, at others he or she will underpin from passivity what is happening in the orchestra, intentionally from the shadows, as a grey eminence. And at other times - why not - he will question what the majority is doing. It is not a rough relationship of me against you, but there is also a we.The composition and orchestration of this piano concerto was made possible by a grant from the Senator for Culture of the Free Hanseatic City of Bremen. This work was funded by an artist's grant as part of the Bremen-Corona-Hilfen programme. The premiere by the orchestra of the Bremer Orchestergemeinschaft is scheduled for the beginning of 2024. Duration: 17 to 20 minutes.
